GEORGE DE DECKER WIT IN WIT November 14 2017 I premiered a composition for solo piano by the Belgian composer and visual artist George De Decker ( www.georgededecker.be ) during a recital in the White Hall of De Singel, Antwerp, a recital recorded by the Flemish classical radio Klara. This intruiging composition, WIT IN WIT (”white in white”) for solo piano and tape is based on JS Bach’s Goldberg Variations. After the recital the idea popped up to construct a new series of “Goldberg Variations” using Bach’s original theme and variations as a skeleton for constructing its own subtle paradise of sounds. In the meantime this idea has materialised into a huge composition for piano and tape. An important source has been Mallarmé poem, “Remémoration d’amis belges” in which the poet describes how a mist that covers the city of Burges gradually disappears: Comme furtive d’elle et visible je sens Que se dévêt pli selon pli la pierre veuve (”As if by stealth and visible I sense That fold by fold the widowed stone unrobes itself”) The concept “Fold by Fold” (French translation: pli selon pli) is also very connected with Boulez’ composition “Pli selon Pli” (1957 - 1989 ) as the quoted poem by Mallarmé is not to be found in Boulez’ composition. First of all, “Pli selon Pli” is the title of a series of white colored paintings by George De Decker. They were his first inspiration to write the music for WIT IN WIT. Secondly, the composition “Pli selon Pli” by Pierre Boulez has been a source of interest as well when writing the music. And he declares that the origin of his musical composition WIT IN WIT also origins his own research on aphasia: memories seem to fade away until the skeleton only remains. The compository approach within WIT IN WIT is a similar one: the skeleton of Bach’s Goldberg Variations only is at the base of the composition. I am very proud to record and present this huge creation (155 minutes) very soon. At the same time I am very pleased and honored that this compositionis is a substantial part of my 50th birthday’s celebration I’m delighted to play the fabulous Straight Strung Concert Grand by Chris Maene, a major invention and a new evolution in piano manufacturing (www.chrismaene.be/nl/the-straight-strung- grand-piano/ ). The quest for perfection of sound in George De Decker’s composition matches this new concertpiano totally as composition and piano make this entire project into a paradise for sound. From a performer’s point of view the music certainly is a quest for the greatest sound quality at all levels. The recording of this major composition takes place in the studios of Motor Music, Mechelen (www.motormusic.eu ).

Déjeuner sur l’herbe... Music  for piano solo by Guy Ropartz, Joseph Jongen, Toru Takemitsu and Claude Debussy This concert programme is a tribute to Claude Debussy. At the same time it reflects the strength of impressionist art by means of its colors, vibrations, silence, orientalism and vision. The music in this recital programme incorporates the affinity of impressionist music with visual art and poetry, Impressionist music is usually associated with the mastery of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Nevertheless, impressionist art has inspired different other composers  as well. This programme connects the souls of the French composer Guy Ropartz, the Belgian composer Joseph Jongen, the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu and Claude Debussy through their shared fascination for the impressionist movement, a remarkable journey.

W. A. MOZART SONATAS KV 10 - 15 for flute and piano Wouter VAN DEN EYNDE, flute Geert CALLAERT, piano Mozart wrote these vibrant sonatas when he was only 8 years old. The orchestration is versatile as the title page of the manuscript mentions the possibility of performing them for piano solo or with the accompaniment of violin or flute (with or without a continuo cellist). The version for flute and piano emphasizes both virtuosity and lightness and let this early music by the young Mozart sparkle as the vivid spectres of a true diamond. I’m happy and deligted to merge with the magical sounds of flutist Wouter Van den Eynde during performance and recording of this sparkling music.

J.S. BACH GOLDBERGVARIATIONEN for piano solo A short time after my 25th birthday the Syndrome of Guilain-Baré hit me totally down and I became totally paralyzed during a short period of time. The recovery however took several months. One of the first music themes I tried to play at the piano during the recovery was the theme of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. At that time it helped me keeping up the spirit and continuing the great struggle for better times to come after revalidation and most of all, being able again to perform. I enjoyed reading a lot about this major composition as well as studying it during many years after. My 50th birthday wouldn’t be complete without performing this master piece I’ve fostered for such a long time.
